WIP Wednesday - Rose Painting

Happy Work in Progress Wednesday!

So, this is what I'm working on. It's nearly finished. I might change up the background color a little bit, and paint the sides and I'm done! Is it bad that I'm a little in love with how this painting turned out?

It's SOOOOO much better than the first time I tried painting it...

I'm a little embarrassed to show this next image to you,  but this is how the painting started out (please don't judge...)

WIP Wednesday - Rose Painting, first step

Hideous, right? I usually draw in my design, then I just fill in the canvas with paint, just to get color down, and cover the canvas. I'm not even sure if this is how you're "supposed" to paint-- it's just how I do it. I wasn't happy with how the painting was turning out and it just seemed really off to me. I tried re-drawing it in, and that was going nowhere. I put the painting off to the side and worked on something else.

I have a sketchbook that I've been attempting to sketch in more frequently and I decided to try and sketch out this image, thinking that maybe once i take the time to sketch it, I would be able to draw it better when I paint it again. This is why in the next images you see my sketch next to the painting. I completely started over. I used my sketch to draw out the shape of my rose, and to paint. I really think that by taking the time to really see the image when I sketched it out, I was able to recreate it much more accurately (it's by no means 100% accurate, and that's okay. It's leaps and bounds better than the first time I tried.)

WIP Wednesday - Rose Painting Part 2.

Already, the drawing/shape of the flower is so much better. I start painting the rose. I'm not really too concerned about accuracy of color right now. I just want to cover the canvas. I know I have a lot of work to do.

I'm still not 100% happy with the color here, so I let it "rest" for a little bit. And when I do finally come back to it to fix the color, everything just "clicks." (Don't you just love when that happens?)

WIP Wednesday - Rose Painting part 6

Ta-da! One much better drawn and painted rose. I'm so happy with it. Like I mentioned before, I might change the background color. Or not. And I need to paint the edges, and then it's finished!
